BIOGRAPHY:  About

I've been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. My Mom tells me that, as a child, I had to draw on every piece of paper available. Even the packaging from shirts etc.

After graduating from high school and thinking about 'careers', I considered such possibilities as becoming a machinist at the Dockyard, a job my Dad had done, or becoming a woodworker or builder of some kind. Ironically, visual art was about the last thing I thought to do.

Not knowing the job possibilities regarding visual art was probably the main reason for that.  After all, there's everything from fine art, graphic design and illustration, to product design etc.

After becoming tired of a string of low end jobs following high school, jobs that included delivering prescriptions, unloading trucks for Canadian Tire among others, I did manage to think of freelancing as an illustrator and started out on that path.

I've been working professionally as a freelance visual artist since 1984, and have I've lived and worked in both Vancouver and Victoria BC.

Illustration and design projects have included: murals (interior and exterior), logos, illustrated posters, cards, book covers, children's books, cartoon characters, technical drawings, product illustration, and website design.

Illustration & graphic design projects have been done using traditional and/or digital mediums.  Traditional mediums have included oil, acrylic, watercolour, airbrush, felt marker, graphite, pen and ink.  Digital mediums include: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Corel Painter.

In 1989 I hooked up with a friend of mine, Andy Wooldridge, who had been painting plein air for a handful of months. I went out plein air painting with him and was hooked.

Starting out as a painter, I worked almost exclusively 'en plein air', producing smaller oils on canvas and wood panel. These works were representational. Occasionally, I would take these small plein air pieces into the studio, and translate them into larger works.

In '92 I started producing abstract works. These paintings were influenced by the plein air landscapes I had been painting. During the 90's, subject matter would include landscapes, interiors, figurative, and still life, and the non-representational (abstraction).

Representational paintings have been done using traditional paint media, including: oil, acrylic.

Non-representational paintings have been done using traditional and/or digital paint media, including: oil, acrylic, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Corel Painter.

I've been exhibiting in galleries since 1989, having both group, and solo shows.

I welcome corporate and private commissions.  References on request.
